Wiki Vandalism Solutions

Federated Wiki promises to address many of these opportunities. We'll dig into each of these suggestions and make sure the new wiki avails itself to these thoughts from the original.

Should be Better

Should address Wiki Trolling. (see Troll Definition)

Should address Edit Wars.

Should address Off Topic material.

Should address Wiki Spam which is different than trolling.

Lets Slow Down Deletions will allow more cooling-off time.

Delay Action. Create an impervious fence with time. Make it impossible for an attacker to get results right away.

Human Verification. Prevents automated vandalism.

Random Peer Privilege. Allow ordinary users some administrative capabilities, when several of them act together.

Personal Identification. Create a login system by which you can track each member's identity.

Wiki Change Proposal. Editors or teams of editors create clean "views" of wiki, and vandalism is tolerated in the unclean wiki.

Personal Watch List. Personal Watch List proposes to defuse vandalism by taking away Recent Changes as an attention-getter.

Lets Withdraw Into Solipsism/Filtered Recent Changes. Users keep a personal list of pages they do not want to see.

Wiki Sig. Allow off-topic material.

Split Wiki into a formal and less formal section

People are People

Anonymize Recent Changes. Take away trolls' ability to target specific individuals.

Tolerate Off Topic. Learn to live with it. Maybe the trolls will go away on their own.

Weighted Franchise. Give more valued members of the community more weight when making decisions.

Gated Community. Only let a select and invited group of people into the "club". (aka "by invitation only.")

Wiki Needs Trust Metrics/Trust Metric/Web Of Trust/Community Warning. Trust is earned when other users don't revert your edits.

Not on Our Radar

Subscription Fee. Make it a financial burden for the trolls to continue.

Police Force. Special users get some administrative authority.

Access Levels/Functional Access. Provide a hierarchy of privileges to different members of the community.

Defensive Script Idea/Open Proxy Self Ban. A mechanism for blocking open proxies.

Lets Speed Up Deletions. Speeding up deletions will allow gnomes to revert changes faster.

Citizen Arrest. (implies Lets Speed Up Deletions, Kill File). A ban feature that automatically reverts all edits by an individual.

Kill File/Ban List. Bad users lose the ability to edit.

Automatic Sandbox (implies Kill File). A way of maintaing an open communication channel with those who have been banned (allows for appeals).
